Shoulder season is the best time to travel and the trickiest to pack for. This is what I pack to stay warm in the fall, and all of it fits in a carry-on.
Sweaters and knits

Merino is the fiber that earns its space: warm without bulk, and it does not hold smell the way cotton does, so you get several wears out of it between washes. This one is machine washable, which is the part that makes it actually travel.
