We try to maintain a keto diet during our affordable upscale full time travel.
But staying on a keto diet while traveling full time can be a challenge.
So we thought we would share our experiences.
Talking about weight is never easy.
Weight isn’t just about eating habits, diet and exercise. Emotion, self esteem and psychology are all wrapped up in weight.
There is so much shame around being overweight that it can be hard to even talk about it – much less be blunt about it.
But we will be blunt anyway.
When we decided to travel full time we knew we didn’t want to be fat – and we were. We were fat and we were embarrassed about it.
And what was the point of going to tropical destinations if we were embarrassed to wear our swimsuits?
More to the point, we hated how we felt and looked.
Like many people who have put on weight we felt shame about being fat. We were smarter than this! We were so in control of so many aspects of our lives…why couldn’t we control our weight!?
And we also felt a little helpless. We had both struggled with weight our whole adult lives. Diet and exercise, up and down on the scale. Over and over again.
Can you relate?
But in order to live light as full time travelers we had to get light ourselves.
After trying the same old starvation and exercise routine for a couple of months Lisa decided we should try a keto diet instead.
Not only did it change our relationship with food, it changed our lives.
Maybe it can change yours too.
You can read about our keto journey here.
So we both lost about 30 pounds on the keto diet.
The next question was: could we maintain the keto diet while traveling?
Now that we travel full time we eat out at restaurants just about every meal.
We still drink wine.
But we’ve been able to maintain a travel keto diet!
We have learned how to eat at restaurants on a travel keto diet.
Found ways to make keto diet friendly breakfasts while traveling.
When we rent an AirBnB with a kitchen we cook keto meals and snacks.
We have gotten good at finding keto diet travel snacks around the world. And no matter where we go, Lisa carries keto protein bars just in case.
Even in countries famous for rice and noodles like Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia we have managed to stick to our travel keto diet.
So we not only lost weight and got healthy on a keto diet, but we found a way of eating that keeps us at a healthy weight while traveling full time!
And it’s impossible to express how grateful we are.
Every day we wake up and actually feel comfortable in our own skin.
We are so grateful we don’t have to search and search for travel clothes that ‘don’t make us look fat.’
Some days we still ‘feel’ fat. But one look in the mirror is enough to make us grin with both happiness and relief.
Needless to say, we are total converts from skeptics to apostles of low sugar, low carb, high fat diet.
We write about our travel keto diet not to preach and proselytize, but because it’s simply a part of our lives now.
That said, if you are curious about the keto diet then please know that we feel very strongly that it has changed our lives for the better. And maybe it can do the same for you.
Each of these articles deal with our efforts to maintain a keto diet while traveling full time.
Sometimes it’s a small part of a larger story like finding something keto to eat on an airplane flight or in a particular city. Other articles are specifically about our keto diet while traveling.
