SafetyWing Travel Medical Insurance

SafetyWing is the relative new kid on the block in terms of providing travel medical insurance to people who travel either a lot or full time.

Click here for our guide on understanding the difference between health insurance and travel medical insurance – and why you need both.

The people who created and work for SafetyWing are digital nomads themselves.

We’ve actually met a couple of SafetyWing employees in Bansko, Bulgaria doing the digital nomad thing.

So they understand first-hand that people who are location independent can fall between the cracks without proper access to insurance.

To solve this, they are building a global social safety net tailored to the needs of online freelancers, entrepreneurs, and remote companies.

They started with SafetyWing Travel Medical Insurance.

But are working on adding comprehensive health insurance to their coverages before moving on to disability and pension products.

Their goal is to keep adding products until they have a complete suite of protections and benefits for entrepreneurs – fully functioning across borders.

You can read more about their vision here.

As American entrepreneurs traveling the world full time we LOVE their vision.

Health insurance, disability and pension benefit choices for American entrepreneurs are terrible. And worse when you are an American traveling full time.

So we are rooting hard for SafetyWing to be successful. We would love to see them create a full suite of location-independent health care, disability and retirement benefits!

SafetyWing Travel and Medical Insurance

For now, though they only offer SafetyWing offers Travel Medical Insurance.

SafetyWing Travel Medical Insurance Coverage Includes:

  1. Travel medical insurance- Access a qualified global network of hospitals and doctors for unexpected medical problems and accidents. Includes coverage for: Doctors, Hospitals and Emergency medical evacuation.
  2. Travel insurance – Includes coverage for: travel delays, lost checked luggage, emergency response and natural disasters and personal liability.

Here is a Summary of the policy

Travel Medical Insurance for Americans SafetyWing

Or you can check out the detailed policy

Safety Wing Provides Great value

Starting at only $37 per 4 weeks for ages 18-39, SafetyWing gives worldwide travel medical coverage. Coverage for other ages is available at higher rates.

And travel to US adds another $31 per 4 weeks. Good old out of control American healthcare system strikes again!

Buy abroad, stay abroad

SafetyWing is available for purchase in 180 countries and can be purchased when already traveling. Critically, there is no cap on the duration of a travel the way there is on Allianz annual travel insurance, for example.

Flexible coverage periods

From your chosen start date, your insurance automatically extends every 28 days until you pick an end-date. Extremely flexible, just like a monthly subscription.

Visits to home country are covered

For every 90 days, you can use your medical coverage for 30 days in your home country if something happens while there.

But you can’t start in your home country.

And you only get 15 days if your home country is the US because, again, the American healthcare system is broken with out of control costs.

Young children included

1 young child per adult, up to 2 per family, age between 14 days and 10 years old, can be included on your insurance without added cost.

Underwriting

SafetyWing is a Y-Combinator company and the policy is administered by Tokio Marine which is one of the largest insurance companies in the world. The Policy is underwritten by certain underwriters at Lloyds.

Group Plans

If you are traveling as a tribe you can purchase on behalf of the whole group traveling with you.
